A Main Tank had gone quiet, which wasn't like them. They were usually cracking jokes, or sending a ridiculous amount of memes through Discord. Even on the bad days, they were a welcomed presence. Then, there was silence. An Off-Tank who lived close to them had permission to check in, and went to their home.
He drove across the city and found the Main Tank seriously ill, and in need of medical care. Quickly, he called an ambulance and followed them to the hospital. The rest of us got hold of their family.
While this is an Off-Tank going above and beyond, this is what they do. They are the leaders and anchors of a party. They don't wait to be asked. They step in.
So, what is an Off-Tank?
In The Battle: Cancer Project, Off-Tanks are the logistical lifeline of the party. They:
Are the first point of contact with the Main Tank
Check in on the Main Tank regularly
Coordinate the party
Handle scheduling and party dynamics
Help the group stay focused, responsive, and connected
They are not Doctors, Therapists or anything of the sort. They are organizers, logistics leaders, coordinators, and ready to keep things moving.
Why an Off-Tank?
When someone is fighting cancer, they need support that's structured, consistent, and dependable. The Off-Tank keeps the party going so the Main Tank can focus on their own self-care, healing, and fighting the battle. Off Tanks can also be an early warning system. If something is off, they may be the first to flag it to leadership and get a Main Tank the help they need. They are the glue between the party, Project, and Main Tank.
Are you ready to take the lead when your party needs you? Be an Off-Tank.
